Moms Returning to the Workforce

A friend has asked a very good question regarding stay-at-home moms who are returning to the workforce.  How do they reflect the information on the resume?  First of all, staying home to raise a family is an honorable occupation and the fact that this family was fortunate enough to be able to afford a stay-at-home parent reflects well on her personal priorities.

While she was raising children, she may have been involved in various child focused activities including leadership work such as PTA or other organizations.  While I would include this in “Other Information” at the bottom of the resume, I would not focus too much on this, or it may appear she is overstating her accomplishments.

If she is returning to a prior profession that she has experience in from years past, this should be the main point of concentration.  Include the dates she actually worked in the field with a note to follow the end date, stating “Stayed home to raise my family from 2002-2009.” or something similar.

Though she has been out of the workforce for a while, hopefully she has stayed in touch with trends, attended some training sessions for her field or similar activities, and this should appear on the resume under the training or education section.
