On-the-Job Relationships
I don’t know about you, but when there is some underlying lying under going on under the sheets between workers or office mates, things can get really awkward and strange. I tend to discourage people from starting a relationship with a co-worker because you never know how it will affect the job situation until it does. Very often, the way it affects things is not in a good way.
Dating a co-worker can be okay, but breaking up with one and then having to work with them on a daily basis can be downright painful and disruptive, even to the best of the best worker in the company.
Another consideration is relative to workplace rules and relationships. Many companies actually forbid dating and others have prohibitions against anyone who is related to anyone else working in the same place or group or even organization.
We had a scenario in one company where there was no hard and fast rule. When one of the patriarchs in the family died, we had to shut down an entire manufacturing line so that all his relatives could go to the funeral.
That is the extreme case, but the fact is, blood is thicker than water and money. Information changes hands inappropriately when it should not occur at all. It is best to stay away from this by not dating others that you work with and not working with your immediate relatives in any capacity, except perhaps a family business.
