Take Time to Say Thanks
From a career standpoint, it is always a good idea to stay in touch with some of the people from the places you once worked. Preferably, you keep tabs on your supervisors and managers who are in a position to say good things about you if they are contacted for a reference.
We have all heard the warning about not giving work references and saying bad things because you could get sued and all that. Dribble-dee-drabble, I say (but not several times fast).
A person can give a personal reference to anyone provided they stipulate that they do not represent the company and of course, you have already been advised by them that they will say nice things about you.
If you are on the hot trail of a great job, send a fresh copy of your resume and a copy of some info about the job to your references so they will be in the loop. After they are contacted, whether or not you get the job, call them to say thanks and tell them how much you appreciate their help. They will surely be willing to help out in the future if you do that.
