Pay Raises in Hard Times
Asking for a raise during tough economic times could be a successful event. A lot depends on the financial status of your business and your company in particular. If they are laying people off, I would not ask for a raise right now, but once things settle down and start to improve, you should give it a try if you feel that your performance warrants a raise.
Prepare a one page memo that you will review with your manager on why she should give you a raise. Make sure it says nothing about your personal financial situation, as this is irrelevant to the company. Use only data that reflects your value as an employee.
If you are denied a raise in your current status, inquire about the possibility of promotion to a higher level, better title or whatever. Then, if you still get no where, think of another perk that is valuable to you. For example, a work at home day every week or even every two weeks is a great benefit. Be professional, don’t beg and don’t pout. Your time will come.
