Make Honesty Your Policy

Someone made an offhand comment to me recently that gave me a little intellectual heartburn.  “Everybody lies,” they said.  While that may be true in the general scheme of life’s ins and outs, it is not true about all resumes.

Never misrepresent yourself on a resume. Do not lie.  A big lie will certainly take you down the wrong road.  For example, saying that you worked at a particular company when you never worked there will come back to haunt you.

But even things like saying you know how to use certain computer equipment or programs when you have no basis for that claim will potentially hurt you in the future.

Why?  Not because you will be caught in the act of fabricating information but because you will have lost your integrity by making false claims. The basis by which the company chose you for the job will have been faulty, and someone else, who may have a better mix of experience and skill will have lost out on that opportunity.

Don’t sacrifice your honesty and integrity so frivolously.  Keep your self-respect intact.
