Doing Your Homework and Research
People ask me about the issue of researching a company before you go for a job interview and my answer is yes, it is critical to your success in many instances. If you look knowledgeable, they will be impressed. The other really good thing about learning as much as possible about the company is that it gives you more data when the time comes to make a decision on a job offer.
Sometimes your research will uncover things that are not complimentary. A Google search may get you information about lawsuits or business issues that made headlines in the recent past. This is worth factoring into your decision equation.
If you have two job offers in front of you, it would make sense to take a job with a secure company that is not making the news in a bad way or on the flip side, may have been voted one of the top employers in surveys.
You will also want to make yourself aware of the company’s stock performance and the type of business that drives their underlying value. Obviously, in today’s market, you would want to shy away from automotive dependent companies.
So today more than ever, you need to make company stability a major factor in your decision on where to work. Research pays.

So very true on the research/knowledge necessary. Besides looking informed, wouldn’t you yourself wish to know what you are getting involved with as a new employee? It’s amazing though. Recently, I had a fellow in hiring tell me how few people really know anything about the position he was advertising! He told me he feels applicants merely send out hundreds of resumes to obtain a job as quickly as possible without even contemplating whether a position is a right fit for them or the company. Cheers.
