Speaking of Job Searches….
One of the things that you probably don’t spend a lot of time thinking about when you are preparing to find a new job is your speech. Generally speaking, if you have a problem, this could be a reason why you are not getting called back for a second interview.
There are different types of speech problems. One of them is the obvious, clean up your act and don’t use bad words problem. You must understand that no profanity is allowable in a job interview. It makes you look shabby and not in control of your speech. This is the easier problem to deal with and can be fixed with practice and slowing your response to questions during the interview.
Another problem is with poor vocal articulation. Some people have a tendency, particularly in a stressful situation, to mutter, speak in a low, hard-to-hear tone of voice or may fall back into an accent that is harder for the interviewer to understand. This is more challenging, but practice will result in improvement.
A different speech problem is a vocal problem that occurs most with women. They may speak in a very high voice that is hard to take seriously or, they may revert to a higher pitched voice because of nervousness. When your voice is very high, it is hard to learn to lower it, but it can be done. Concentrating on lowering the voice while speaking more slowly is one way to practice. If you can work with a partner who can give you feedback on how you sound and what sounds better as you practice, this works well, but it will take many practice sessions to evolve into a permanent change.

Very interesting. I hadn’t thought about the high pitched woman’s voice. I think one of the biggest turn offs that I saw during interviews was the guy who tried to always flirt with me. Gads, that was bad. Like my husband, the co=owner would appreciate hiring someone like that! And the voice is the biggest dead giveaway for the guy who thinks he’s “all that.”
