More on Whine

There are certain people who choose not to do their own work, but rather, to go around to everyone else’s offices and try to stir up conflict or start rumors. Eventually, these folks develop bad reputations with those people who just want to get their jobs done and don’t have time for goofing off and starting trouble.
More often than not, the guy who does this rabble rousing is some schmuck like the one I will call Chanley, who had been at the company since God was a boy and knows every little, dirty secret there is to know.
He is also the guy who hoards his own knowledge and will not train anybody else on how to do his job, though no one knows what this guy actually does for the company. Maybe he handles the mail and delivers packages around the office, which gives him one more opportunity to snoop into the business of others.
One of my friends and I decided to “play” with Chanley one day and my friend came up with a ridiculous rumor about one of the staff (who we both happened to dislike as well). The funny part was that I heard a bastardized version of the rumor within minutes of the trap being laid.
While we did have a good laugh about it, guys like Chanley are not a valuable asset to the company. Maybe they were at some time in the past, but he needs to move on and find something constructive to do with his time. Sadly, he is probably still working there and there is one of him in most every company, to one degree or another.

That often happens in a big company, but small companies with the owner as the HR person has a great way of getting rid of the Charleys. In education, these people actually sit at the heads of classrooms and drive the kids crazy. Funny how incompetence can be found in every profession.
