Vacationland - A Sunny Poem for a Winter’s Day

How about a nice warm poem for a cold wintry day? This one is called Vacationland, which we all know is the state of Maine, where I spend at least one week in the summer, often at Lake Cobboseecontee in Winthrop, Maine, where this photo was taken by my daughter, Jessica. Please enjoy it.

VACATIONLAND

by Therese Haberman

Whispering wave swells sparkle
against crimson setting sun.
Heat beats drums from old songs ~
Styxx and Vertical Horizon
wake dream-swept memories.

Loons linger over
long black beaks
glistening on lazy waves.

Balsam scent hovers
like an emerald hummingbird
beyond the screen porch.

Ancient pines darken
soft-stepped labyrinths.
All paths lead into the lake’s caress.

Cold clamp of water releases its grip.
Floating waders marvel mid-stroke
at low passing heron and osprey.
Huge nests form patterns in tall trees.

Silhouettes of small boys fishing
play on hazy vision remembrances
as men beguile their plump treasures
to the surface.

A setting sun glitters
through hemlock boughs.
Log benches serve fireside desires
for more S’mores, sparklers and camp songs.

Crisp air stirs fireflies on magical moonlight.
All yawns lead us to flowered cottages.
Wandering fish wait for a new lure’s enchantment
on the next dew-spattered morn in Maine.

Hey, very nice. A warm poem for winter. I love how you conjure pictures with words. That was very relaxing.
