What if you can’t figure out what it is you really want to do with your life? Say you get an Associates degree in business or a four-year liberal arts degree and it is still a big mystery to you, what you should do with the rest of your life.

My advice would be to get yourself into some sort of management training program. It can be retail, accounting or marketing, but you want find a learning ground to develop hands on skills in dealing with difficult people, supervising others and handling a wide assortment of tasks simultaneously. The most important thing you need to do is make sure you are challenged by the job. You should not be 100% sure of what you are doing or how to do it. Maybe about 75% sure. That means you have a growth curve of about 25%, which is healthy.

Why do need this margin of challenge in your job? The key is attaining a steady stream of personal and professional growth. The 25% is basically, what you are getting out of the experience, while the remaining 75% is what you are contributing on the job to the company on an ongoing basis.

If you feel you have learned it all and can do most of the aspects of your job with your eyes closed, find another job or get yourself promoted if you can. People who stay and stagnate are not helping themselves and will eventually become more of a detriment than an asset if they develop a poor attitute on the job.
