Salary Snippets
![]()
Going back for a moment to our analogy of purchasing a used car and negotiating a salary, there is one thing to keep in mind. You can kick the tires on the used car all you want, but I would strongly advise against kicking the boss who wants to give you a crappy salary or diminuitive pay increase! Just a few words to the wise on avoiding an assault and battery charge.
I have been asked the question about threatening to leave the job if you don’t get the pay increase you want. I will say it every time, never threaten to do something unless you are prepared to accept the consequences, or in this case, leave the job.
If, however, you are prepared to leave if they don’t “give in to your demands”, and you have an offer from another company clutched in your little hands, sure you can tell them to give you X dollars. Maybe they will value you so highly that they are willing to bend the salary scale in your favor. Good for you if they do, but don’t count on it.
Let’s face it, salary (money) is not everything. If you are working in a job you hate, the fact that you are getting higher pay cannot compensate you enough for your misery. Pick the job first, your co-workers second and money as a third consideration, provided you can make ends meet. And have a wonderful weekend, too.
