Salary Straight Talk
Let’s talk about salary comparisons. You were in your boss’s office and have mastered the skill of reading upside down. You glimpsed something with your office mate, Ted’s pay on it and are aghast at the fact that he makes more than you in the same position. Add that to the fact that he was hired after you, and you are ticked, to say it the nice way.
This is a hard thing to deal with. In the HR 101 class, they tell us that salary is never an effective motivator, but can be very demotivating if someone becomes dissatisfied about it. I will say this. There are many factors that play into determining a pay offer. One of them is pay equity among the people in the position.
However, if a person comes in with a degree or higher degree than you, they may warrant a higher pay rate. If they have more years of experience in the function, they may get a higher offer. Also, if they are coming from a job at a high pay rate and the company really likes their credentials, this could result in the disparity.
My suggestion is this. Wait a couple of days, until you have cooled down. Then make an appointment to sit down with your boss and discuss the matter calmly. Tell her you know what Ted makes and you are upset that he makes more than you. Ask her to initiate a pay increase on your behalf to correct the disparity.
This may not occur. Or, they may tell you they will consider this at the next pay increase. They may do nothing. We can discuss some options you have next time. Stay tuned!
