May I Pretty Please Have a Raise?
You want a raise and you read yesterday’s blog. Let’s go on from there…
Allow the boss to absorb the information and to respond. Listen carefully to her response and thank her for taking the time to discuss the matter with you.
If you are unsuccessful in your efforts, and your boss says it is out of his hands or that his boss said no, tell him you would like to speak to the manager personally to present your case. Allow him to participate in the meeting as well. Follow through on doing this. If you are refused, be cordial, polite and reasonable.
Even if you do not get the raise, if you handle yourself well and act maturely, you will score respect points with your superiors. Realize that sometimes company policy may stand in the way of granting off-cycle pay increases.
If you are really dissatisfied with your situation, look elsewhere. If you went into the meetings with a job offer from another firm, now is the time to make your move if they say no. Leave for a better opportunity where you do feel wanted and appreciated for your efforts.
If at the end of the game, you still want to stay at the company for other reasons, try to get some other concessions for yourself instead of the raise. This may be a written promise of a raise at some future date, a plan where you can work from home one day a week, child care payments for when you travel or whatever it is you want. If you still cannot prevail in some way, maybe you would be more appreciated somewhere else.

what are your thoughts when finding out a co worker makes more than you- and started after you?
