Resume Writers? Hold On to Your Money.
![]()
A friend was asking me about the possibility of hiring someone to rewrite his resume for him to make it sound better. I would discourage anyone from spending money in this way. It is one thing to hire a career coach who will look at you and your credentials from a hiring manager’s perspective and give you suggestions and perhaps some training on how best to present yourself.
But hiring someone to write your resume is not money well spent. At the very least, a resume should be a factual account of where you worked, what job titles you held and the appropriate dates of your employment along with a history of your educational achievements. A better resume will also contain a professional objective and some sort of compilation of career skills you possess and demonstrated in various jobs.
A resume that will get you the most mileage will have another level of detail. This will include not only a synopsis of what you did at each job, but what you accomplished. Above and beyond the job requirements, what milestones of success did you reach in each of the jobs you held? What were you most proud of and why were you such a valuable team player or manager or officer? It’s not just the words that make the resume, it’s the person peeking out from behind the words. Hopefully, that will be you, and not some paid resume writer.
